I remember rag day, not sure what year, but the magazine printed for the event was, I think, the rattler.

What beautiful pictures! I would like to create a funny retirement online card for a colleague with one of them (just a way to say he is older enough to remember that moments very well). Do you know any website that gives you this possibility? The greetings card website I know does not allow you to do that. Any reccomendation pls?

Joe - not quite sure what you mean - but if I wanted to do what you do, I’d just copy and paste into a Word Document. Add your own wording and send as an attachment.... question is whether there is Copyright on any of those images. Although I think(?) if you’re not using an image for commercial gain you can use it.

Cracking pictures of a tradition we don't see in Reading these days.

Actually got me thinking - whilst some places still carry on old traditions, is there anything that still carries on today that's an old tradition in Reading?

Having looked at the letters pages of some of the archive copies of the local press, it would seem that whingeing about the council is nothing new...

Reading Raising And Giving (RAG) is the official fundraising body at The University of Reading and still runs events to raise the funds (I’ve got involved in some) – just no parade these days due to the dreaded Elf-n-Saffty

Shame, really. I’m not old enough to remember RAG day parades but I hear, and have seen pictures, that they were fun. How do they publicise current events, OM? Can’t say I recall seeing anything about them or heard from relatives of anything on.

TBH they don’t tend to advertise outside the UNI, unless for local events – not sure why

I’ve got involved in some in local things when I’ve found out through the groups I am involved in plus being friends with people helping organise them

Where would they parade now?

Nose-to-tail traffic - and the town centre a virtual no-go area for motorised vehicles.
Back in the day, they’d be at every traffic light, jump out in front of the cars, rattling their collection boxes for about a week ahead of the parade through the town centre - imagine that now

Though with nose to tail traffic, it makes it easier to collect money. You just walk down the lines of cars waiting in the queues!

Though Elf n Safety would probably have something to say about that, and people generally having less spare cash on them. When I was at Uni (not Reading) we used to be able to collect in excess of £1000 by doing that.

They close parts of the town for the carnival....although, will that ever go ahead again?

It's not just 'elf and safety that's put paid to these shenanigans. Rag Mags in the past have got in to trouble over the nature of some of the jokes, almost every float would upset someone or other (I was involved in creating a 100 foot long street dragon for a rag day procession and no doubt now would be accused of cultural appropriation) and so it's just not worth the bother.

It was all about fun, freedom and raising funds for charity. What's not to like? Best to take a brolly down Broad St, as I remember that small bags of flour were cast out of upper windows.

I remember seeing that one – my first - 1963
Saw the next couple of years as well as my father managed a shop in town back then so we watched from the upstairs window then went round to see them come the other way – no flour bags from us though!

It would be great to have a procession in Reading that encompasses all - celebrating the town's history. A real community event.

No Bam, his had a bulk grain tank on it. I have driven a truck in a carnival for a primary school and it's not too bad.
